What’s in your Lunchbox?

Nothing. That’s what is in my lunchbox right now. Absolutely nothing.

Of course, I am not actually talking about my Strawberry Shortcake bag that I used to pack full of food on long trips. No, I am talking about the new Lunchbox app.

I heard raves and rumors about a free new app that tells you where to find all the free food events on campus.

Sounds pretty sweet, right? It would be…if someone actually used it.

As of right now, there are zero people who have tapped in and put their food events into Lunchbox. I made something up and put it in just so I would have something to look at.

Don’t get me wrong, this app has potential — great potential. But it needs some users.

The app is simple to use. Just go to the app store and download it for free. Open it up and input some basic information like name, school, graduation year, major and optional email. That’s it, done.

Lunchbox displays three menus: “today at USU,” “tomorrow” and “this week.” On the top left is a plus sign that you tap to add an event. Just punch in a few details and voila, it’s on the menu. I put an event on and it took me all of 29 seconds.

Once an event is posted, you can tap it to see all the details. Lunchbox offers some sweet tools at the bottom of the event listing.

There’s an edit button for editing the details, a calendar button adds it to your calendar, an alarm sends you a notification at a selected time and the message button allows you to quickly message the event to a friend. It even includes a preset “Hey, want to get (menu item) with me?” before the event information when you send the message.

All the tools are very simple and completely user-friendly. Not a lot of extra jargon and fancy stuff to confuse the eyes or the user.

But this app will only be a benefit to students if students use it. Otherwise, it is just an empty lunchbox. Surely there is nothing more depressing to students than a complete lack of free food on campus.

We can do better. Rally your clubs, tell your friends, download Lunchbox and start listing your events. No more empty Lunchboxes.
