Women’s hoops falls at home to Wyoming

After fighting back to tie up the game in the third quarter, the Utah State women’s basketball team fell to the home Wyoming Cowgirls 59-40. Previous to Saturday’s match-up, the Aggies had won four straight games, including a thrilling win over Boise State and a win over conference No. 1 seed Colorado State.

The Aggies headed to Laramie, WY to take on the Cowgirls for the second time this season, losing to the Cowgirls earlier in the year 71-48.

It was a rough first quarter for Utah State, shooting 25 percent from the field and putting up an 0-for-4 mark from 3-point land. The Cowgirls shot 6-of-14 from the field and added another seven points from the charity stripe. Wyoming led 19-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The Aggies made up ground over the next two quarters. Utah State outscored Wyoming 18-11 in the second quarter, cutting the Cowgirl lead to five. Opening up the second half, Utah State strung together a series of defensive stops and good looks on the offensive side to tie the game at 33-33.

That would be the closest the Aggies got. After a quick steal and a long pass down the court, Wyoming started an 10-0 run to close out the third quarter and put themselves back on top, 43-33.

The final quarter would be much of the same, as the Cowgirls outscored the Aggies 16-9. Rachel Brewster led the Aggies with 15 points in the contest.

Utah State only recorded five assists on the day, their lowest total for the entire season.

The Aggies will go to sunny San Diego to take on the Aztecs, their second meeting of the year, on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. Utah State won the previous match-up in Logan, 53-47.
