Johnson moves up career assist list as Aggies fall to SDSU in five sets

The Utah State women’s volleyball team lost a close match three sets to two against San Diego State on Saturday afternoon at the Wayne Estes Center. USU Senior setter Kassidy Johnson recorded 43 assists on her way to moving up to eighth place in career assists for the Aggies with 2,031.

“I did what I needed to do to help my team succeed,” Johnson said. “I thought we played really well.”

Utah State would fall to the Aztecs in the first two sets, 25-13 and 25-20. The Aztecs dominated the Aggies on the net, finishing the sets with 32 kills and just nine hitting errors compared to the Aggies 15 kills and 13 errors.

“We didn’t really pay attention to the scouting report in the first two sets,” said USU head coach Grayson DuBose.

The third set saw a change of momentum for the Aggies, who would lead the entire set. The Aggies would win the set 25-19 after a blocking error by San Diego State. Utah State finished the set with 15 kills and just one hitting error to the Aztecs’ 17 kills and eight errors. The Aggies would take the fourth set 25-20 as well behind three kills from freshman outside hitter Whitney Solosabal.

“We were having more fun and enjoying ourselves,” Solosabal said. “We weren’t as stiff.”

The Aggies dropped the final set 15-12 after leading 8-5 early in the set. Utah State would finish the game with 52 kills and 26 errors to the Aztecs 71 kills and 29 errors.

“I think we did a better job of staying on task,” DuBose said of his team’s effort in the final three sets.

The Aggies next game will be at Wyoming on Oct. 11 at 6:30 p.m.
