Dec. 8, 2018 David Archuleta-15

David Archuleta continues his “Winter In the Air” tour at Logan High School

Hundreds of people filled the sold-out show at the Logan High School auditorium Saturday night to hear the former American Idol runner-up David Archuleta sing Christmas songs.

The 28-year-old performed an array of Christmas songs at his “Winter In The Air” concert, including three original songs from the new album.

From the moment he walked on stage to the moment he left, the audience was captivated — snapping along with Archuleta to songs, singing along and staring in awe of his angelic voice. The venue was shockingly small for such a big name performer, but it provided for an intimate concert.

Archuleta is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and famously served a two-year mission in Chile for the church. But while a lot of his fans, especially in Utah, are also of the LDS faith, his voice crosses religious lines.

The crisp, clean voice America fell in love with when Archuleta was 16 is still the same today — if not better. He belts out notes like it’s nothing and holds them effortlessly. He takes his audience on a journey through his music and leaves everyone wanting more.

Archuleta began the concert by singing “Melodies of Christmas,” a song from his 2009 Christmas album, and followed that with a Spanish rendition of “Tidings of Comfort and Joy.” One of his best performances of the evening was when he sang his 2016 song “My Little Prayer” alone on stage on the keyboard.

The band played every other song alongside Archuleta and he introduced them halfway through the show, saying three of them had something in common, the name David. The audience laughed with him as he continued to share small anecdotes throughout the show, including background on the songs he’s written.

Archuleta said he wrote his album’s title song for people who don’t get the chance to experience the beauty and magic of winter — something he joked Logan residents don’t need described to them.

“Y’all are good up here,” Archuleta told the audience, laughing.

Although it was a Christmas concert, Archuleta knew when to take himself seriously and when to have a little fun. During his performance of his first off-theme song of the evening, “Glorious,” audience members waved the flashlights on their phones along with the song.

Following that performance, Archuleta had the audience on its feet dancing and singing along to his biggest song, the 2008 single, “Crush.”

He wrapped up the show with his song “It’s Christmas Everyday” and almost everyone in the audience was on their feet, clapping along to the song. He and his band exited following the performance but reemerged a few moments later after the audience pleaded for an encore.

He sang “Silent Night,” which he said is his favorite Christmas song. His heartfelt performance earned him a well-deserved standing ovation from the audience.

Archuleta’s tour will continue in Utah throughout December and following his Utah concerts, he will perform across the country from Florida to New York.
