Movie Review: Lego Movie 2

If you enjoyed “The Lego Movie,” you’ll definitely get a little nostalgic seeing “The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.”

The film begins directly after the events of the first movie with a well-placed cameo appearance of Will Ferrell’s character is interacting with his son, who was responsible for the plot of the original Lego movie.

The film presents itself as metafiction that frequently breaks the fourth wall as we watch Emmett save the Lego universe from an apocalyptic event. It’s just the storage bin, in reality, but the juxtaposition of a sibling squabble over imaginative toy playtime ensures chaos as alien invaders kidnap and destroy the Legos.

Though I expected that these aliens were the real villains of the entire film, the climax was jaw-dropping because of the plot twists. Once everything resolves, you can’t help but smile as you realize that the Legos, and the kids, are still growing up.

One aspect of the film that shines is the humor. The witty dialogue and hilarious situations were the staples that scored highest for me. There is, of course, the occasional cameo appearance of a famous person in Lego form. I found that many of these easter eggs had too much hype around them, though nods to Chris Pratt’s recent lead role in the “Jurassic World” films were really well done. The toy-gun-wielding dinosaurs with subtitles to translate their classic raptor screeches are well-placed in every instance.

If you enjoyed the humor, the message, or even just the downright absurdity of “The Lego Movie,” you’ll enjoy “The Lego Movie 2” even more.
