Logan Needs A Target

The missing jewel of Logan: Where is our Target?

There’s no getting around it, Logan, Utah needs a Target Corp. store. We have two Walmart Inc. superstores and two Smith’s Food and Drug supermarkets but no jewel of retail stores. From the red shopping carts to a wide variety of reliable products, Target stands out among grocery stores. Where is our Target?

Logan has been begging for a Target for a while now. However, this retailer requires certain benchmarks to be met before it opens in any new city. Target requires the median wage of a community to be roughly $63,000 before making building plans. Unfortunately, the median wage in Logan is about $53,000

However, the corporation is forgetting something: Building a Target in Logan would mean building a Target for the entire valley! Logan’s placement is more than ideal because the residents of Utah cities like Logan, Smithfield, Nibley, Mendon, Hyde Park and others are all potential customers for a new Target. The closest Target is 52 miles away, so getting a Target here in the valley is long overdue.

Target also needs to consider the fact that there are 16,000 college students attending Utah State University. Students are coming to USU from all over the country, and the number of university students only increases over time. New students could be shopping for dorm room supplies at Target instead of Walmart. I don’t know about you, but I always go to Target over Walmart. It’s just a superior store.

Target would be raking in the dough, and we would be raking in the blessings of Target.

Fellow students are also in agreement. Macy Anderson, a USU student and Target enthusiast, said the perfect place for a Target to be built would be behind the Chick-fil-A restaurant, where the Shopko store just closed down.

Alli Amis, a sophomore at USU, agrees.

“I get everything from Target,” Amis said. “Like I literally get everything at Target. It’s a million times better than Walmart.”

Target needs to come to Logan. The college students who live here are begging for a Target. I’m tired of shopping at Walmart because it never smells good in there. I miss that red logo and the cute little statues of the Target dog, Bullseye.

Bringing a Target to Logan would translate to happier college students and increased revenue for the corporation. Everyone would benefit from a Target in Logan, with the exception of Walmart.

It sounds good on paper, sure. But I’ve been to several Targets across Utah, Arizona, Texas, and Alaska. They don’t offer much, if anything, more than Shopko did. And Shopko, even at its peak, was never very busy in this valley before they went out of business.
As much presence as they have, the university students just don’t drive enough business beyond restaurants here.

I used to work with a guy whose wife is a regional manager for Target. I texted him a few months ago pleading the same case. He said his wife “did hear Logan will get one in the next year or two“. This is obviously rumor, but it’s a promising one. We can only hope and pray.
