Westside Coffee Company to open location near campus

Logan will soon be getting a new coffee shop thanks to John and Diane McMorris, the owners of Westside Coffee Company.

The new cafe, called Eastside Coffee Company, will be located East of Utah State University campus on 400 North in the old Baked cookie shop.

The couple plans to use the new location as a space to roast their own coffee. They have purchased a roaster that will arrive at the beginning of March. According to the couple, they will save money roasting their own green coffee beans instead of buying roasted beans

“Roasting coffee is a passion for John, and we really love the idea of trying to create different coffees and flavor profiles,” Diane McMorris said. “This will give us the opportunity to offer our own product instead of someone else’s.”

They also hope the new location will help draw in a new crowd of customers.

“I would definitely visit a new café if it was within walking distance of campus,” said Kenzie Platt, a student at Utah State University.

Eastside will have a slightly different and more limited menu from Westside, due to the newer shop starting out smaller, Diane McMorris said. The couple plans on having seating for about 40 people and extending the café’s hours.

“We have always loved coffee shops,” Diane McMorris said. “Our favorites are in houses in quaint, little locations. We always thought it would be fun if we had a coffee shop of our own.”

In 2018, the couple fulfilled their dreams of owning a coffee shop by renovating a house in downtown Logan into the Westside Coffee Company.  The couple completed all of the renovations for Westside themselves. John McMorris, a contractor, turned the lot into a charming, local business.

“It was in pretty sad shape [when we bought it],” Diane McMorris said. “We had to gut the whole thing, and that was all John’s vision.”  They have completed a majority of the renovations for Eastside themselves as well.

Diane McMorris said they do not have an official opening date for Eastside yet, but they are shooting for some time in March.

This is great but they will need to change their policy on how long you can stay! At Westside they don’t like you to stay very long. Students want a place to sit, drink coffee, and stay for a couple of hours! I stopped going to Westside because of this!

Agreed with every part of this! If a campus coffee shop is opening, they need to be understanding that students are gonna be staying for a long time
