USU celebrates Fourth of July with flag mowed into Quad
The Utah State University Facilities team went patriotic with its landscaping this week.
On Thursday, the university unveiled a Quad-sized American flag, with the stars and stripes intricately mowed into the grass.
Shane Richards, landscape operations manager, talked about the project in a video released by USU just before the Fourth of July weekend. Richards said the team was inspired by a similar landscaping feat they saw on Facebook last year.
“We brought it up this spring and said, ‘Do we want to try something like this for the Fourth of July?'” Richards said, “and the consensus was we had enough people excited about it, so we said, ‘Yeah, let’s give it a shot.'”
With some planning and measurements, the flag came to fruition during the week leading up to Independence Day.
“For the first time, it’s alright. All 50 of our stars ended up being straight and okay. So that’s what our goal was, is to make sure our stripes are straight and the stars are straight,” Richards said.
As long as they have enough staff to do it, the team will create the gigantic flag again next year, according to Richards.
The flag is available for the public to view, presumably until the grass needs to be mowed again.
