BREAKING: Quarterback Jason Shelley dismissed from USU football team

Utah State announced Sunday evening that starting quarterback Jason Shelley had been dismissed from the football team for a “violation of team rules.”

Shelley transferred from the University of Utah over the summer — which likely prompted the immediate transfer of Henry Columbi to Texas Tech — and started the first four games of the season for the Aggies. The junior completed just 51.5 percent of his passes (51 of 99) for 420 yards with two passing touchdowns and two interceptions. Shelley also ran for 68 yards on 33 attempts (totals which include yards lost on sacks).

According to multiple sources, Shelley was involved in a verbal altercation with a teammate following the team’s 35-16 loss to Fresno State and the two had to be separated.

According to the press release from Utah State’s athletics department, interim head coach Frank Maile will not comment further on Shelley’s dismissal.

Backup quarterback Andrew Peasley is currently going through COVID-19 protocol and was not available for Saturday’s game against the Bulldogs. Peasley has played in three of USU’s games, completing 6 of 16 passes for 29 yards, no touchdowns and one interception. The third-string quarterback according to the preseason depth chart is redshirt freshman Cooper Legas. The other QBs on the roster are redshirt freshman Josh Calvin and freshman Garrett Larson.
