Flight instructor, student killed in USU Aviation plane crash
Two people were killed in a USU Aviation plane crash Friday morning: USU flight instructor Blake Shumway and aviation student Michael Carpenter.
USU confirmed the fatalities in a press release. The plane crash took place around 9 a.m. between Mendon and Wellsville.
“We are devastated by this morning’s tragic crash and the loss of members in our USU community,” said USU President Noelle Cockett. “Every student and employee is part of our Aggie family, and we know many individuals will feel this loss deeply.”
Other USU Aviation flights were canceled today, and USU plans to offer counseling and other services to individuals in the aviation program.
Shumway had worked for USU Aviation since September. Carpenter, who was majoring in aviation technology/professional pilot, was scheduled to graduate this fall.
