Old Main evacuated due to ‘suspicious package’

Old Main is evacuated in response to a suspicious package left in the building on Sept. 30.

At 2:44 p.m. on Sept. 30, an Aggie Alert was sent out to students at the Utah State University Logan campus ordering an evacuation of Old Main due to a suspicious package.

The package was located on the northeast corner of Old Main. According to a university spokesperson familiar with the situation, an Utah State employee witnessed a device dropped under a bush outside the building. The building was evacuated shortly after, and Explosive Ordinance Disposal, EOD, was called.

The EOD K-9 indicated on the package, giving officials enough reason to treat the device as explosive.

Though the package was deemed to be non-explosive, EOD detonated the device outside of Old Main in a controlled explosion.

The building was then swept and cleared by EOD, and the all clear was given at 3:47 p.m.

At this time, it is unclear what the nature of the device is, though it will be taken for additional testing at a separate site.

This is a breaking news story. The Utah Statesman will provide updates as more information comes out.
