USU Gymnastics undefeated at home after win over Oregon State
Utah State University Gymnastics beat future Pac-12 competitor Oregon State University at their last home meet of the season in the Dee Glen Spectrum on March 6, making them undefeated at home this season with a record of 8-0.
This is the fourth time USU Gymnastics has gone undefeated at home in its 49-year history.
“Honestly, that wasn’t even a goal of ours this year,” said Kristin White, the head coach of the team. “To see them come in and fight every single home meet and win at home and be undefeated this year, I’m incredibly proud of them. What a tremendous accolade for this team to have, and I’m definitely going to remember this year for the rest of my life because it has been absolutely incredible.”
On March 3, Utah State University’s Vice President and Director of Athletics Cameron Walker announced White’s contract will be extended until 2030.
“I just feel so honored to be here and have the support from our administration and from our fans,” White said.
The final score of the meet was 196.650 to 195.150, making it the fourth meet in a row that the Aggies received a score of at least 196. This was also the Aggies third-highest home score in school history and tenth-highest overall.
The Aggies swept, with their highest scoring event being floor with a score of 49.325.
Sydney Jelen and Nyla Morabito both received scores of 9.925, Jelen on bars and Morabito on floor.
White said she believes Jelen has a selfless role on the team since she is one of the team’s highest scorers while also being a starter.
“You don’t typically expect your starter to have your highest score,” White said. “It’s somebody that sets the tone, and the rest of your lineup builds.”
White said not having her in that number one spot would be a detriment to the team because of the trust they have in her.
“To see the scores that she deserves in that number one spot — I’m incredibly proud of her,” White said.
With it being the final home game, the team recognized the four seniors: Marley Peterson, Chelsea Southam, Amari Evans and Avery Bibbey.
“We’ve competed at the Spectrum for so long now, and it’s such a great place to compete in,” Bibbey said.
Bibbey said it was special to compete with her team at home with their families in attendance.
“These four ladies have been tremendous for our program, and the thing that makes me most proud is how they’ve stuck together, and that’s so rare to see in college sports these days,” White said. “They’ve really led this team, and they’re resilient women, so I’m proud of the performance they had tonight.”
White said it’s not the meet’s performance she will remember, but the four years of hard work they put in.
“I hope they take tonight and are incredibly proud but also think about the journey that they’ve had and know that we are so thankful for them,” White said.
Utah State will conclude its regular season on March 15, with a tri-meet hosted at Arizona State with Southeast Missouri.
