A quick look into USU women’s soccer’s 5-1 win
The Utah State University women’s soccer team kept the ball rolling in its victory against Marquette on Sunday. Here’s a look into the match by the numbers.
5: Goals scored by the Aggies
Sunday the women’s soccer team recorded the most goals it has scored in a single game since the 2016 season. The goals were netted by freshman midfielder Sid Barlow, junior midfielder Ashley Cardozo, sophomore forward Marli Niederhauser, junior midfielder Kami Warner and senior forward Alecia Robinson. It was each player’s first goal of the season. Previously, the Aggies had three total goals across all games this season. These five goals led the Aggies to a 5-1 victory against the Golden Eagles.
18: Total shots by USU
The Aggies took 18 total shots during Sunday’s match, eight of which were on goal. This is the most shots they’ve recorded in a single match since last September when the team took on Idaho State and recorded a total of 32 shots. Shooting hasn’t been a strong suit for the Aggies this season. Before the game against Weber State last week, each of USU’s opponents were able to record a higher number of total shots than the Aggies. Creating more shot opportunities has been a goal for the team this season.
3: First half goals in 7 minutes
Head coach Heather Cairns has spoken a lot about wanting to start stronger and capture the momentum early in a game. It seems like the team is starting to be able to accomplish that. Three of the Aggies five goals were scored in the first half of the match. All three of the goals were within seven minutes of each other. The first goal came at 30’, the second at 32’ and the final goal of the first half was netted at 37’. The last time the Aggies were able to score three goals in a single half was in Oct. 2017 against the University of Wyoming.
9: Saves by Diera Walton
The freshman goalkeeper has proven herself in the box several times this season. On Sunday, she blocked nine of the Golden Eagles’ 10 shots on goal. This bumped her total saves to 23 on the season.
4: Points for Ashley Cardozo
Ashley Cardozo not only added a goal to her stat sheet, she also recorded two of the team’s four total assists. This ties her career high for points in a match. Kanyan Merrill had the other two. Cardozo also had four total shots with two on goal, season highs for the junior midfielder.
3-2-0: The Aggies current record on the season. In 2018, USU’s record five games in was 1-4-0. At least this far into the season, the team looks to be in better shape than in the previous campaign.
Up next, Utah State will continue its road trip Friday in Normal, Illinois where the squad will take on the Illinois State University Redbirds. The match is set for 6 p.m.
