‘A thousand words’
Imagine these:
A beautiful ocean sunset in Mexico.
Or, gondolas lining a canal in Italy.
Now picture them.
Photos from the third annual Study Abroad contest may do a better job.
This past week, photos from students who have studied abroad were on display in The Juniper Lounge of the Taggart Student Center.
“It is to promote [the] experience to study abroad,” said Trevor Budge, an assistant in the Study Abroad Office who arranged the contest.
It is also a chance for students to share their experiences.
“The photos are memories they’re going to have for the rest of their life,” Budge said.
Studying abroad is a good investment worthy of your time and the experiences gained. It is an opportunity to meet new people, and see new cultures, he said.
“It is a life school,” Budge said. “You’re learning.”
There were 56 entries in the contest, with half in each category – people and places.
“Essence of Cusco” was the grand prize winner. The photograph will be featured in next Friday’s Cache Magazine.
There was a first, second and third winner in each category by two different judges. Photos were judged by Jay Wamsley, the adviser of The Utah Statesman, Juan Franco, vice president for Student Services and Mary Evensen-Hengge, the International Students and Scholars adviser. Students could also vote for their favorites.
The winners will receive scholarship money, prizes and recognition.
Tomorrow all the photos will be on display in the Juniper Lounge. The winning photographs will then hang in the hall by the Study Abroad Office on the third floor of the TSC.
Here are a few of the winners:

“Essence of Cusco” won first in the “People” category in voting by the judges and people. Jennifer Hulse, who took it, said, “This picture was taken after hiking the Inca trail to Machu Picchu in Peru. This was man was blind and playing for money in the street almost every day. He represented so much of what characterized this city to me that I had to preserve his memory.” (Photo courtesy of study abroad office)
“Ghost Rider” was taken by Dave Barton. He said, “Riding the train is a huge part of Swiss culture. In the photo, a local rider´s reflection in glass creates a mysterious illusion.” (Photo courtesy of study abroad office)
