Abrego named top aggie

Julie Ann Grosshans

Utah Statesman: How does it feel to be named the Utah State Athlete of the Week?

Jessenia Abrego: I’m happy. I didn’t know until I got a call last night. It’s good.

US: How important was it to win the first meet of the season at home?

JA: That was our main goal. Just to win, start off the season with a win. We have confidence now. We have to improve a little more but I think winning the home meet is really going to help us later on in the season.

US: How does it feel to be one of the senior leaders on the team?

JA: It’s exciting but it’s sad at the same time. I’m really hoping to finish off the season strong.

US: How does it affect the team not being part of the Big West Conference anymore?

JA: I think it’s more exciting because we have better teams [in the Western Gymnastics Conference]. It should be interesting.

US: Ray Corn has been coaching gymnastics for 25 years, how does it feel to be competing under him?

JA: He’s seriously a great guy. He’s why I chose to come here. We just clicked so fast. He’s not only a really good coach but he’s like a father figure.

US: What is your favorite event and why?

JA: Probably floor. I like to perform for the crowd. My personality comes out on floor. I love tumbling also.

US: What is your major?

JA: Liberal Arts and Sciences.

US: Does your name mean anything?

JA: No, it’s just Spanish. The weird thing though is I don’t have a middle name. All of my brothers and sisters have middle names but I don’t.

US: What is the best Christmas present you got this year?

JA: Probably a Nike outfit. It’s the whole Nike outfit with the shoes and stuff.

US: What do you think of mullets?

JA: I think they’re horrible. Why would anyone want one?
