Active shooter exercise scheduled for Valley View Tower

Utah State University officials are asking that students and anyone on campus avoid Valley View Tower Wednesday morning while an active shooter exercise is carried out. The drill begins at 9 a.m. and will involve both USU campus police and Logan City police.

The emergency exercise was announced via email by USU’s Student Affairs Office Tuesday morning. According to the email, the drill will be the first of multiple emergency exercise planned for this semester.

“The safety of our campus community is extremely important to everyone at USU, and we plan to implement emergency exercises at Valley View Tower throughout fall semester,” the email read.

The email also encouraged students to review Utah State’s Department of Public Safety active shooter information page.

Steve Jenson, the executive director of USU Housing, said the emergency exercises are a good use for an empty building.

“We’re very supportive of anything that goes on at the university that can help us be prepared for any situations that might arise,” Jenson said. “So this was a great opportunity to take advantage of a vacant building.”
