Aggie gymnastics defeat Boise State on Spectrum Magic night
Utah State University Gymnastics defeated Boise State in convincing fashion on Feb. 20 for their annual Spectrum Magic night, defeating the Broncos 196.325 to 194.950. The Aggies’ score was the highest team score of the season and the ninth highest home score in program history.
In the victory, the Aggies won all four events against the Broncos, scoring a combined 48.900 on vault, 49.250 on bars, 49.050 on beam and 49.215 on the floor.
“I am so incredibly proud of our women tonight. They were gritty, they found a way to win and they found a way to come up really big,” said head coach Kristin White. “I’m incredibly proud of our women to have the ninth highest score in program history is just awesome, especially on Spectrum Magic night.”
Junior Nyla Morabito won the event for vault, scoring a 9.825. Avery Bibby, Olivia Orengo and Isabella Vater all tied for the highest score on bars with a 9.875. The beam was won by Orengo with a 9.875. The floor was once again split three ways between Mara Gruber, Chelsea Southam and Vader.
Another standout was junior Mya Witte, who, after winning Mountain West Beam Co-Specialist of the Week last week, again posted the second-highest score on the beam for the Aggies with a score of 9.850.
“Maya’s done a phenomenal job this year, you know, being very confident in her gymnastics and growing in her routine. And so, I couldn’t be more proud of her,” White said. “You know, it’s really hard to have a career high and then come out and do another great performance, but she did just that tonight. I’m really proud of her and excited to see her the rest of the year.”
The team credited their focus on supporting one another as the main reason for setting their season high score.
“The main goal was to just focus on each other, our team, just sticking together, not worrying about anyone in the audience or the other team,” Orengo said. “I think that’s what really helped us tonight. We really work together, we’re focused in on each other and we believe in each other.”
With the win, the Aggies have won five of their last six meets. White credited the team’s depth for helping them maintain such strong results.
“The biggest thing I see is our depth. We have really great depth on our team this year, and so having those athletes that come out in exhibition and score higher than even athletes that are in the lineup is really good to see,” White said. “Anytime you have people that are pushing the lineup, it’s going to make us better. I think the hard work that they’re doing in the gym has really been paying off, and they’re having fun, and you can see that on competition floor.”
With the Aggie win, they are now 12-4 on the season and currently sit at No. 29 in the Road to Nationals poll. The Aggies will look to continue their success as the face off with Air Force at home next Friday, Feb. 27 at 6:30 p.m.
