Aggie hockey ends in 3-3 tie at Weber
The Aggies exploded early against the Weber State University Wildcats Friday in the first exhibition game of the Utah State University club hockey season.
Three consecutive goals were scored in the first period by Aaron Sutliff, Greg Fneed and Iam Tracy (a short-handed goal).
The second period of the game saw the Aggie offense slow and the Wildcats scored their first goal.
The Aggies seemed not to be able to regain the first period enthusiasm and were unable to lay in any more goals.
The Wildcats, however, scored two more goals right before the two-minute mark.
“Toward the end, we ran out of steam and they were able to tie it up,” said Aggie general manager Keith Bleazard.
The Aggies were hurt by a lot of penalties, as were the Wildcats throughout the game.
Saturday, the Aggies faced the University of Utah in a much more even match. The Aggies snatched up an early lead, but Utah never let up as both teams were always within two of each other.
In the last period Utah was able to tie the Aggies at seven and then take the lead eight to seven with 3:25 remaining in the period.
One and one half minutes later, Utah slapped in another puck to make the score nine to seven. The puck, propelled from the stick of Derek Anderson, hit the back of the net as the buzzer sounded indicating the end of the game.
The Aggies had three power play goals on the night and Nick Phiros even threw in a hat trick for three goals.
