Aggie hockey falls to Northern Arizona on Thursday night

The Beehive Showcase is a four-day long, six-team mash up. It began Nov. 15 with a game between with the Aggies and the North Arizona University Lumberjacks.

The Aggies spent the first period playing in slow motion while the Lumberjacks wove through the defense with little resistance.

NAU’s Kristjan Toivola scored the first goal halfway through the first period. Toivola scored over USU’s goalkeeper’s right shoulder to give the Lumberjacks the lead.

Less than a minute later USU’s Chase Ball ended up with his forearms on the back of NAU’s Alexander Shupe’s neck, pinning his face to the ice and nearly starting a team wide fight. This got him thrown from the game with his sub sitting in the penalty box for seven minutes for major head contact.

Within one minute Max Mahood moved the Aggie deficit up to three with an impressive bar in shot quickly followed by slipping one under the pads for a quick jump to 3-0 to end the period.

Whatever CJ Westlake told the Aggies as it worked to get a fire burning in their bellies. Robert Ducay scored the Aggies’ first goal in the first few minutes of the second period by putting the puck through NAU’s goalie’s knees.

However, Lucas Lomax raised the bar after to end the period at 4-1 for the Lumberjacks.

With a fresh sheet of ice and a goal on the board, a quicker Aggies line continued to put pressure in the Lumberjacks side of the ice and eventually got another goal thanks to Josh Kerkvliet. His goal moved the score to 4-2 for the last 10 minutes of game-play to end the game.
