Aggie hockey team wins home opener 5-2 over Weber State
The Utah State hockey team hosted Weber State at the George Eccles Ice Center Friday night in North Logan, winning by a score of 5-2.
The past few years Weber State has been a close competitor to the Aggies, but USU quickly put up three points in the first period against the Wildcats in this one.
A seventeen minute scoring drought was ended with five minutes left in the second period, making it 4-0 for ten minutes before a fifth score buried the Wildcats even deeper.
In the third period, Weber State finally got on the board to make it 5-1.
Two minutes later all hell broke loose as Weber’s Kyle Waronker smashed into USU’s Josh Kerkvliet, causing a nearly bench-clearing brawl which lasted for almost two full minutes of gloves, helmets, and fists flying.
The Wildcats were able to get on the board again shortly after the excitement. The last six minutes of the game expired with little drama, as the fate had already been decided
“It was great to be in there with the crowd as loud as they were,” said Utah State first-year head coach CJ Westlake. “I’m still getting goosebumps just thinking about it”
After the game, the players signed autographs for the fans while celebrating a victory in their first home game of the season.
“We have seen a lot of support from the students and the community,” Westlake said. “The only thing I want you to know is that we appreciate it and hope to keep seeing you guys out there.”
Utah State’s next home game is Oct. 26th at 7 p.m. against San Diego State. It is the team’s “Pink the Rink” match, and fans wearing pink will receive $1 off of tickets.
