AGGIE NOTES: What’s in a name? Not much at CS Fullerton

Julie Ann Grosshans

The Aggies. Although Utah State has expanded its horizons in terms of emphasis, the name still reflects the university.

The Titans, on the other hand, have next to nothing to do with Cal State Fullerton or any of its programs.

According to the CSF media guide, more than a hundred nicknames were submitted to the school and the Student Council narrowed the selections down for voting. When all was said and done, the Titans narrowly defeated the Aardvarks and Rebels.

Although no one was exactly sure what the Titan represented, the “First Intercollegiate Elephant Race in Human History” gave some clarification.

“What began as a practical joke attracted elephants from universities around the nation and even Oxford from England,” according to the CSF media guide. “To publicize the event, a circus-like elephant called Tuffy the Titan was used and it began appearing on sweaters and notebook covers around the campus. With no other mascot, the elephant was unofficially adopted.”

And the rest is history.

The original school colors for CSF were voted on by the students and royal blue and white came out the victors. The athletic uniforms were orange though to represent the former name of Orange County State College.

Today, all three colors are represented on the uniforms.
