Aggie soccer frustrated with second OT loss in a row

Chris Barney

The Utah State women’s soccer team lost its second consecutive overtime contest Tuesday as it fell 1-0 to Portland State in Oregon.

Once again, the strong Aggie defense held off their opponents for the length of regulation.

Junior goalkeeper Megan Mills recorded seven saves, but in the second overtime redshirt freshman Jamie Blakesley scored off a pass from freshman Sophia Mundy to end the match.

The game lasted nearly 103 minutes.

Utah State struggled offensively, having only had three shots and no shots on goal in the extended match.

Portland State took 16 shots, eight of which were on goal.

“It’s tough to get a win when you don’t put a shot on goal,” said Head Coach Heather Cairns. “We just didn’t play well enough to win.”

The loss evens Utah State’s record to 4-4 on the season, while PSU improves to 3-5.

The Aggies had four corner kicks in overtime but were not able to capitalize.

The last corner kick actually led to the PSU score when Blakesley intercepted the ball. She took the ball to midfield and went for the give-and-go with Mundy.

The goal is the sixth for Blakesley on the season. She leads the Big Sky Conference.

USU continues its road trip Friday as it heads to Boise to take on Northern Colorado. Sunday, the Aggies will face Northern Arizona, also in Boise.

Northern Colorado is 3-2-1 on the season. Its last win came against the division II team Eastern New Mexico.

Northern Arizona is 1-4-2, its lone win coming against UC Riverside.

The Aggies won’t play again at Chuck and Gloria Bell Field until Oct. 3 when they host Big West Conference foe Cal State Northridge at 3 p.m.
