Aggie women fall to ‘Stangs

Andrea Edmunds

The Utah State women’s basketball team was unable to pull out a dramatic comeback, falling to Cal Poly 66-44 in California.

The Mustangs, who remain undefeated at home, came out strong early and the Aggies spent the rest of the game trying to dig themselves out, which they were unable to do.

Few of the Aggies had a good performances for the night.

Anne-Marie Torp had her best game of the season, scoring 14 points and pulling down five rebounds. She was five of six from the line and shot almost 50 percent from behind the arc.

Ali Aird was just shy of a double-double with 13 rebounds and only eight points. She scored six of her points in the first half and was only able to put two up on the board in the second half.

Unlike the last time the Aggies faced Cal Poly, Christina Zdenek was not a major factor in the game. Last time, Zdenek had 31 points including a three-pointer at the buzzer. Zdenek scored a three once again in the final minutes, but she only had five points in 21 minutes.

After playing against Long Beach last week, Brittany Tressler looked like she would become a major force for the Aggies, but she was unable to perform well and fouled out with over five minutes left and only one point.

During the second half the Aggies would mount small six or eight-point runs and looked like they may comeback, but Cal Poly effectively stopped that with strategic timeouts and good shooting.

Cal Poly shot 48 percent from the floor for the game to the Aggies 28 percent.

The Aggies struggled with ball control, handing the ball back to Cal Poly 29 times to the Mustang’s 18 turnovers.

Aggies Terrin Johnston and Tressler alone had 15 turnovers.

Cal Poly’s Katy Paterson was once again a strong factor for the Mustangs, leading all scorers with 16 points in 20 minutes.

The Aggies will have their last game of their four-game road trip, as they finish it up at Santa Barbara on Saturday and take on the Gauchos at 8 p.m.
