Aggie women’s tennis team falls to the Cougars

The Utah State University’s women’s tennis team played Brigham Young University today.  

BYU came out strong in the doubles matches with a sweep over the Aggies.  

For the Aggies, team one consisted of Zeynep Ozturk and Laura Hilario against Cougars Emilee Astle and Jacque Dunyon. In this close match, the Cougars beat the Aggies 7-6.  

For the second match in doubles, Aggies Niyati Kukreti and Magdalena Pureco played Kendall Kovick and Kaavya Sawhney. The Aggies couldn’t seem to pull away in this match, losing 6-1.  

For the third doubles match, it was Aggies Ana Sanchez and Maile Brilhante against Cougars Kara Wheatley and Tina Li. In this match, the Aggies fell to the Cougars 6-2.  

For singles matches, Cougar Li took on Ozturk for a heated battle. Ozturk took the first set 6-4, and Li evened things out by taking the second set 6-4. The final set went to Li 7-5.  

In the second match, Sanchez played against Sawhney. Sawhney dominated and swept Sanchez in both sets 6-2 and 6-4.  

The Aggies sent it right back to the Cougars with a sweep of their own in the third match. Cougar Dunyon played Aggie Hilario. The first set was a tough battle between the two, but Hilario came out on top 7-6. In the second set, Hilario took control and dominated 6-2. 

Aggie Kukreti played Cougar Wheatley in the fourth set. This one was rough for the Aggies, with Kukreti losing both sets 6-1 and 6-0.  

The fifth match was a battle that ended in a tiebreaker game between Aggie Indya Nespor and Cougar Kovick. Kovick stole the first set from Nespor 6-4. This didn’t stop Nespor from keeping her head above water, winning the second set 7-6. Although the Cougars had already won, Nespor played hard in the third set, winning 1-0.  

In the sixth match, Cougar Astle played Aggie Pureco. They only played one set, with Astle beating Pureco 7-6. After this, the Aggies decided to retire.  

This brought the final overall score to 4-2 in favor of the Cougars.  

In an email from the women’s tennis media relations, head coach Veronika Golanova said, “We competed really hard today, but didn’t take some chances that were right in front of us. We are disappointed, but it was a great learning opportunity and we are ready to get back to work.”
