The Aggies scored three individual first-place finishes at the Baldy Castillo Invitational as they opened their outdoor track season in Tempe, Ariz. Saturday.

No team scores were kept as the Utah State athletes competed against host Arizona State University and other universities, including Brigham Young University, Idaho State University and Washington State University. “We had a lot of good individual performances,” Utah State Head Coach Greg Gensel said. “You always want to have a good solid performance at the first meet, and that’s what happened.”

Aggie Brett Guymon won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 50.53 seconds, and Maurice Jenkins won the pole vault with a mark of 16′ 4.75″.

On the women’s side, Shae Bair won the pole vault, posting a height of 12′ 5.5″.

Other Aggies to score well were Kristen Coombs, who took second in the 1,500 (4:33.54) and third in the 800 (2:14.30); Katie Farner, who earned second in the high jump (5′ 8.75″); and Kristi Connors, who took fourth in the 400 (54.69).

The women’s 4×400 relay team earned second (3:53.84), and the 4×100 team posted a fourth-place finish (47.04).

On the men’s side, Justin Wickard took second in the 110 hurdles (14.21), Nick Seedall earned fourth in the 400 hurdles (53.00), Josh Sides finished fifth in both the discus (158′ 8″) and the hammer throw (187′ 11″) and Robert Crockett took fifth in the high jump (6′ 6.75″).

In addition, the men’s 4×400 relay team took home a fifth-place finish (3:19.60) for the Aggies.

Gensel said the first meet of the season is to find out where the team is at in its training.

“It was a big meet and we needed to find out what big competition is all about. We needed to find out where we were at,” Gensel said.

The Aggies’ next meet will be at the University of California Davis April 6. They will compete against Chico State University, Sacramento State University and the University of California Berkley.
