Aggies’ game against Cowboys cancelled
Utah State joined a growing list of teams that have had games cancelled this season. The Mountain West announced Wednesday morning that the USU vs Wyoming football game had been cancelled. The conference’s Twitter account said the following:
“Due to an upward trend of COVID-19 cases within the Utah State football program, the Aggies are unable to participate in the scheduled game on Nov. 19 at Wyoming.”
The Mountain West set roster thresholds prior to the season, stipulating that a game could be cancelled if one of the teams had fewer than 53 scholarship players available for a game. The statement from the MW makes it clear the Aggies are the team that fell below that threshold.
The statement says there is no plan to reschedule the game for another time and the result is a “no contest.”
Neither Utah State’s athletic department or the football team have commented on the situation beyond what the Mountain West released in its initial tweet.
Thursday’s game would have been the collegiate debut of redshirt freshman quarterback Cooper Legas. The former Orem Tiger was named the starter on Monday after Jason Shelley was dismissed from the team and with backup Andrew Peasley unavailable due to COVID-19 protocol. Peasley will likely be available for the Aggies’ next game, throwing the quarterback depth chart back into the realms of uncertainty.
