Aggies go 3-0 in series against LDS Business College
Utah State’s club baseball team went head-to-head against LDS Business College over the weekend in what was a one-sided three-game series.
The first two games, both on Friday, ended via mercy rule in the seventh inning, with the Aggies coming out on top in both occasions. Game one ended with a final score of 15-2, while game two ended 16-3.
In the lone Saturday game, LDS Business College got on the board first, but the Aggies made a comeback in the fifth inning where they took control for the rest of the game by scoring seven runs. The final score of the third game and the series ended with USU on top again 12-2.
“I think we came out pretty strong,” said freshman third baseman Tobie Swenson. “Everyone got to hit on the lineup in the first inning, and it just went really well.”
The first inning of the series set the tone for the rest of the night. During that inning, USU put eight runs up on the board, taking the lead early on in the game and building the momentum they would need to run on for the rest of the night. sophomore pitcher Pete Nielsen was instrumental in bringing home the first win, allowing only four hits and two runs over the course of five innings and striking out six batters and walking one.
“Baseball is all momentum,” Swenson said. “Whoever carries the momentum throughout the game obviously wins.”
After a night like they had against LDS Business College, the team is starting to get back on track after a rocky start at the beginning of their season. While playing in a tournament in Mesquite, Nevada, the team lost three of the four games they were slated to play.
“We kind of struggled in Nevada,” Swenson said. “but we will do a lot better throughout the season for sure.”
The team will travel this upcoming weekend to play in a weekend tournament against Montana State in Belgrade, Montana.
