Aggies overcome weather to sweep weekend games

Sammy Hislop

The Utah State University’s women’s soccer team made significant progress this weekend by winning both of its road matches.

Aggie forward Brigid Turner also secured a spot in the record books by tying the USU record of 25 goals in a career.

She knocked in two goals as USU defeated Northern Arizona University 3-0 Sunday afternoon, giving her eight goals this season.

The Aggies also defeated Boise State University 2-1 Friday.

Both games were part of the NAU Mountain Classic.

Along with battling the two teams, USU took on another opponent – mother nature.

Against BSU there were 45 minutes of lightning delays along with pouring rain and 50-mile-per-hour winds.

The NAU match had 35 mph winds, but on top of them were clear blue skies.

USU Head Coach Jen Kennedy Croft said the wind was difficult to play in, especially for hitting the ball long distances down field.

“We showed we can really play through a lot of adversity,” she said.

Each Aggie goal came in the first half of play.

Along with Turner’s two goals, Aggie forward Amber Tracy put one in unassisted 15 minutes into the contest.

Croft said the Aggies were eager to put the Lumberjacks (3-6) away in the first half because they did not know how much of a factor the weather would be in the second half.

USU 2, BSU 1

Amber Tracy kicked in her second game-winning goal of the season in the 64th minute to seal the win for USU.

The Broncos (4-4) put pressure on the Aggies early as they scored two minutes into the match off a goal by Bronco midfielder Brittany Zoellner.

The first weather stoppage came at the 34th minute followed by another one in the 42nd minute.

The Aggies fought back in the second half as Chanel Blaquiere scored her first collegiate goal in the 52nd minute.

With both wins, the Aggies (6-2-2) now have the same number of wins as they had all of last

season.
