Aggies win five titles at BYU Invitational

PROVO — Utah State Track and Field traveled down the I-15 to compete in BYU’s annual Clarence Robinson Invitational this weekend. Athletes from BYU, Weber State, Oklahoma Panhandle State, Idaho State, Dixie State, Central Wyoming College, Southern Idaho, Westminster, Utah, Utah Valley, and Southern Utah competed in the event. The Aggies took home 5 titles and 14 top-3 finishes.

Standout Nebraska transfer Dominic Bentil took home first in the 200 meters with a time of 20.99 seconds. The junior broke his previous personal best, set during his time at Nebraska, of 21.64 seconds. His sub-21 second run ranks 9th all-time in Utah State history for the event. Bentil is the first Aggie since Joshua Gordon in 2017 to break the 20-second mark. Bentil was disqualified in the 400-meter finals for a lane violation.

Bentil has proved an invaluable piece of the Aggies track and field team this season. He garnered titles in the men’s 200 and 400-meter events in the Aggie Classic Invitational on April 11th.

The Aggie men brought home one additional track title, thanks to freshman Mitchell Athay. Athay placed first in the men’s 5000 meters with a time of 15:46.07.

In the field events, sophomore Bradon Ovington claimed the shot put title with a mark of 16.79 meters (55-1.00). The Ottawa native broke his previous personal best of 16.00 meters (55-1.00).

She also placed third in the hammer throw with a throw of 57.54 meters (188-9.25). Her throw ranks 10th in Utah State history for the event. Garren has been a member of Utah State track and field since 2017 and holds the record for 3rd best shot put throw in school history.

Sophomore Abbey Bryant took second in the women’s 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.82. With her time, Bryant broke her previous personal best of 14.05. Her time ranks 9th in school history for the event.

Sophomores Olivia Smith, Delphine Dah, Emma Reeves, and freshman Alison Richter claimed first in the women’s 4×400 meters with a time of 3:44.7. The time broke each runner’s personal best in the event.

The Aggies will travel to Idaho State in Pocatello and Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa to compete in their final meets of the regular season from April 29th to April 30th. The Mountain West Track and Field Championship will be held in Clovis, California from May 11th to May 14th.
