Alumni Band offers musical variety show

Utah State University‚s alumni band gives a concert full of variety Sunday, July 20, in the Kent Concert Hall at Utah State.

“This performance will have something for everyone,” said Nicholas Morrison, director of the band. “The band will present, in addition to some tunes from days gone by, a new arrangement from the hit movie, “Lord of the Rings.‚”

The concert will honor pioneer day with an arrangement of “Come, Come Ye Saints” by Utah State University faculty composer Dennis D. Griffin.

The program also includes a soloist, Betty Hammond, a resident of Logan who has participated in the alumni band concerts on numerous occasions.

“An active member of the local musical community, Betty always delights her fellow musicians and audience members,” Morrison said.

A vocalist, Hammond will sing “Songs My Mother Taught Me” by Dvorák among other selections.

Founded recently by trumpeter Ken Tingey, the group “Logan: The Band” will play music in the style of the famous band “Chicago” as the intermission feature.

Other musical selections for the concert keep in rhythm with the old-fashioned park band style the band is known for. These selections include “Washington Post” by Sousa and “Strike Up the Band” by Gershwin.

The concert starts at 7 p.m., admission to the concert is free for all and children are welcome.
