Ambitious students running for Logan offices

Students have the option to vote for their fellow students in the upcoming mayoral election. Three Utah State University students will be running for Logan city office.

The primary election will be held Oct. 2 with the final election on Nov. 6.

Jeremy Kidd and Joel Nitchman are running against each other and three other candidates for council seat No. 5. Michael D. Huston is running for mayor against five others.

Nitchman is an undergraduate majoring in economics and finance. Kidd is working on a combined master’s and doctorate degree in economics. Huston is majoring in sociology and English.

Associated Students of Utah State University is trying to get students to register to vote and to be aware of the issues surrounding the election, said Celestial Starr Bybee, ASUSU executive vice president.

“We’re pushing student voting because it is important for the city to recognize the needs of students. Voting gives us that voice needing to be heard,” Bybee said.

Registration can be done through the County Clerk Office at 170 N. Main St. Forms need to be postmarked by Sept. 12 or given to Bybee in Taggart Student Center Room 326 or 338 by Sept. 20 to vote in the primary elections.

Forms will also be available online at www.utah.gov/ovr. The last satellite dates are Sept. 21 and 24, according to the County Clerk Office.

If students have lost their registration card, changed their address or changed their last name, they need to re-register.

Registration booths will be set up on campus and there will be a link on the ASUSU home page to register at www.usu.edu/asusu.

“The city really can’t do a lot without the support of the university, and we can’t without theirs. We need to work together for the benefit of the majority involved,” Bybee said.

There will be a series of activities to get students geared up for elections.

Civic Awareness week will be held Sept. 24 to 28. The theme will be “No Vote, No Voice.”

A counsel forum will be held on Sept. 24 at noon in the Sunburst Lounge, and a mayoral forum on Sept. 25 at the same time and place.

This will give students the opportunity to see the candidates, hear the candidates’ views and ask questions. Information about the candidates in the primary election will also be given out at the forums and throughout the week.

“I suspect students are interested to know how candidates feel about issues including parking in Logan, jobs in Logan, and basically anything involving USU and Logan as a whole,” Bybee said.

On Sept. 26, there will be a movie in the Kent Concert Hall. Voter registration is required for entrance.

The real Herman Boone, the coach from Remember the Titans, will speak at noon on Sept. 27 in the TSC Ballroom. Registration booths will be set up outside.

A dance will conclude the week. Entrance discounts will be given with proof of registration.

“No matter what happens we have an effect on each other [USU and the community],” Bybee said,
