An international extravaganza will come to life when the Arcata String Quartet performs a free concert of viola quintets in the Harrison Auditorium at the Eccles Concert Center at Utah State University Monday at 7:30 p.m.

The Arcata String Quartet, which includes Marjorie Bagley on violin, Michael Carrera on cello, Brant Bayless on viola and Christopher Takeda on violin, will be joined for the night by a member from the Tokyo String Quartet, Kikuei Ikeda.

The Tokyo String Quartet is among the best in the world, according to the Arcata String Quartet press release.

The relationship between the two musical groups has been lasting.

Though all members of the string quartet reside at USU, some used to play with members of the Tokyo group, Bayless said.

The relationship has gone from that of a mentoring one to one of mutual respect for one another, he said.

“This concert provides a great opportunity,” Bayless said. “The Chamber Music Society of Logan brings the cream of the crop to Cache Valley, and we believe this concert is an extension of that.”

The concert will include works from composers like Mozart and Brahms, opening with Mozart’s Viola Quintet in G minor.

Following the intermission, the program will continue with Brahms’ Quintet in G major.
