ASUSU approves $5,000 for Robbins Awards, votes to vote during Tuesday council meeting

The Associated Students of Utah State University Executive Council approved the request for the Robbins Awards on Tuesday.

Funding for the Robbins Awards, which provides all university awards, such as Man and Woman of the Year, was eliminated after state budget cuts. ASUSU requested the $5,000 from its capital and support fund to replace money lost.

This year, money generated from student activities, particularly Homecoming Week, did not accumulate enough money to provide for the Robbins Awards because of a state budget loss ASUSU did not plan on.

Mike Brockbrader, ASUSU Organizations and Traditions vice president, said, “We’re just replacing money the government took away.”

The council voted that the request for the Robbins Awards funding should be reviewed for final approval next week. However, because of the urgency in carrying through the details of the request, the council voted to vote on approving the award as a third reading item. After a majority vote, the council voted and approved the request.

Among other items discussed, the council voted to hold the ASUSU Executive Council meeting Jan. 21 at 5 p.m. instead of 5:30 p.m. because of the candlelight vigil for Martin Luther King Jr. Day at 6 p.m. the same night.

A committee of students and faculty will meet with potential companies Wednesday and Jan. 22 to find a host for the new Banner System for USU.

Celestial Bybee, ASUSU president, said, “[The companies] would like to see what we would like as students, and they are pretty much competing for the spot.”

The system will carry out many central Internet functions of USU. These include admissions, registration, maintaining student records, payroll, billing and receivables and alumni contributions, according to www.carleton.ca/banner.

Camey Hatch, ASUSU Public Relations vice president, said of the Banner System, “It’s an individual Web server for each individual person. It’s kind of where technology is going.”

Bybee also informed the council that the Board of Regents is meeting Friday to vote on Tier II Tuition. The leadership committees reported on upcoming events and other projects they are involved with.

ASUSU Executive Council meetings are normally held Tuesdays at 5:30 p.m. They are open to everyone.
