ASUSU changes meeting format
The Associated Students of Utah State University are taking a different and – they hope – more organized approach to governing the student voice this year.
Elected Academic Senators and Executive Council members met Monday and Tuesday in separate meetings respectively, in hopes to simplify and resolve issues relating to areas throughout the university.
“I think it’s going to be a powerful structure,” said Gary Chambers, associate vice president for Student Services, “You’ve got the right players in the right positions.”
In years past, ASUSU senators and members of the Executive Council met together each Tuesday.
Although meeting together as a group has worked in the past, President Quinn Millet hopes that meeting separately will allow each voice to be heard and for issues to be resolved in half the amount of time.
“Seeing the different organizations throughout the state, we really do have something great here,” said Millet.
University-wide issues and proposals pertaining to both executive council and academic senate, will be discussed and voted on during their individual meetings.
A representative from Academic Senate will then represent the senate’s voice during executive council meetings pertaining to those specific issues, said Spencer Watts, Academic Senate president.
President Stan Albrecht also spoke to the Executive Council during Tuesday’s meeting, urging them to work closely with the administration this year now that this new structure is in place.
“You make a big difference in what you do,” Albrecht said to the council. “You serve as the entire student body at Utah State University.”
The weekly meetings are open to the public and students are invited to attend. The Academic Senate meetings are Mondays and the Executive Council meetings are held Tuesdays both at 5 p.m. in the Senate Chamber Room on the third floor of the Taggart Student Center.
