ASUSU moves to implement online student services

The Associated Students of Utah State University Executive Council unanimously approved a request Tuesday to provide $2,000 to purchase a computer server to host the online student exchange service.

“All we need is the funding to buy the hardware for the server,” Camey Hatch, ASUSU Public Relations vice president, said to the council.

The current online exchange will become a venue for other services. Aside from exchanging books, students will be able to use the Web site as a ride board and a place to sell contracts, vehicles and other items.

Ericka Ensign, ASUSU Academic vice president, said, “This is a great opportunity to revamp. It definitely has more potential for improvement than it did before.”

In other business, Matt Ekins, ASUSU student advocate, introduced a resolution to appoint two more students at large to the University Student Fee Board. Those students will represent the student voice. Currently the board consists of 10 student officers and three students at large.

Ekins explained that while student fees are increasing, the enrollment remains the same. He hopes the increase will better represent where the students want the fees to go to.

“We feel it’s important to have student input,” he said.

Most students pay student body fees and students at large should have a strong voice on the USFB, according to the resolution.

In another agenda item, the council approved a request from the Polynesian Student Union for $2,000 for its annual luau. The money will pay for costumes, food and other items. The luau will be held March 29 at 5 p.m.

Ensign also informed the council that in a random survey, the majority of the student body who voted online was in favor of implementing reading days before finals week. Ensign presented the resolution to the Faculty Senate on Monday. The senate will vote on the resolution April 7.

Duke Di Stefano, ASUSU administrative assistant, informed the council that Stater’s Council was moved to April 10 at 7:30 a.m. because of schedule conflicts with President Kermit L. Hall. The meeting was supposed to be held Thursday morning.
