ASUSU: Science Senator

Ben Marchant, a junior in computer science, and Jeffrey Leek, a sophomore, majoring in mathematics, are runninng for the position of College of Science senator.

“I have experience both with programming and legislation,” Leek said. “I have been involved heavily with Science Council, so I already know the ropes, and I have worked with Week of Welcome.”.

Marchant said, “I feel I am the best choice for this position because of my strong work ethic, logical reasoning and good old common sense. These are three qualities that I possess that will help me be the best science senator possible.”

“Our college is very diverse and I plan on serving each department and catering to each of their needs. I’ve got the traits to lead and that is why I’m the best choice,” Marchant said.

Leek said his goals include establishing an ambassador’s program and new scholarships as well as promoting undergraduate research.

“I believe that with the help of my associates on Science Council I can get things done for the College of Science,” he said.

Marchant said, “I plan on getting to know more of the students personally in each department. Personal contact along with forming a council for every major in the college and meeting with them regularly will not only keep me in contact with the students, but also get more people involved.”

Leek said Science Council is starting an ombudsman table for students every week.

“I also hope the College of Science Newsletter we are developing will bring awareness of Science Council to the students, and I hope to work closely with professors to help announce College of Science events,” Leek said.

“I think that my first step would be recruitment, recruitment, recruitment. Science Council needs to expand, and we need to recruit people from every department. So I would initiate my term by talking to the students and trying to get them involved with ASUSU and Science Council,” Leek said.

Marchant said, “I believe that I am the best person for the job and I really want to be able to prove this to them.”

Leek said, “I want students to remember my e-mail – jtleek@cc.usu.edu. If I am elected, I hope that many of them will look me up, even if they just want to introduce themselves and get to know me. I think the most important aspect of a senatorial position is communication, with faculty, students and staff.”
