ASUSU votes to start finals at later time

Students might be able to sleep in a little bit longer during finals week next year.

The Associated Students of Utah State University Executive Council unanimously voted for final exams to begin no earlier than 7:30 a.m. during university business days.

If passed through the Board of Trustees, the resolution will go into effect fall semester.

In other business, Ericka Ensign, ASUSU Academic vice president, asked the council to reconsider implementing reading days, non-class study days prior to finals week, in light of a few amendments to the resolution.

Ensign said she hopes that whether or not Faculty Senate passes the resolution, it will better enforce no-test week “in an effort to give students a better opportunity to study for finals.”

She also emphasized that reading days would only require the 2004-05 academic school year to start up to two days early instead of three.

Celestial Bybee, ASUSU president, is in support of reading days.

“If Ericka’s going to go to bat, I’m going to go with her,” she said.

In other business, the council discussed the redesign and restructure of the online book exchange. Aside from exchanging books, students will be able to use the Web site as a ride board and a place to sell contracts, vehicles and other items.

Camey Hatch, ASUSU Public Relations vice president, and Matt Ekins, ASUSU student advocate, have been working on the project throughout the semester.

Software to run the site is an open source used at no cost, but $2,000 will be allocated to purchase a computer server that will host the online student exchange service, according to the bill.

“This server will actually be hosted by ASUSU,” Hatch said.

The council will vote on the changes to the book exchange next week.

Lindsay Lyman, ASUSU Activities vice president, presented a request for $2,000 from the Polynesian Student Union for its annual luau. The council will vote on the request next week.
