Attacks create patriotism

Since the Sept. 11 tragedies, the pride of the country has not been as outwardly evident as it was since WW II. The respect and dignity in displaying our national emblem is of great concern to most Americans.

Michael Sloniker, a Utah State University journalism major, said he was confused with the mixed emotions of the times.

“Frankly, I think it’s a sad state of our country, if it takes thousands of people dying for us to display the flag and show how much we care about this country,” Sloniker said.

Shanna Nielson, a senior in the journalism and communications department, disagreed with some Americans who claim it’s “sad” that only a tragedy elicits patriotism in this country.

“People raising their flags after the terrorism attacks simply show, the world that we are a strong and united country. It doesn’t mean that those people were never patriotic before. I don’t feel like you have to have American flags decorating your home to be patriotic. It is something that is in your heart. What I think would be ‘sad’ is if no one showed their American pride after the tragedy and no flags were lifted in response to the attacks,” Nelson said.

“It is great to see so many Americans displaying their patriotism. This is a great opportunity for all of us to learn how to properly display our national emblem,” said Maj. Paul Ermer, professor of aerospace studies Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corp (AFROTC) detachment 860.

The National Flag Code was adopted on Flag Day, June 14, 1923. There were no federal or state regulations governing display of the United States Flag prior to the flag code. This code is the guide for all handling and displaying of the Stars and Stripes.

It does not impose penalties for misuse of the United States Flag. That is left to the states, and to the federal government for the District of Columbia. Each state has its own flag law.

If there are any questions concerning the manner in which to properly display the flag, information can be found on Web sites, one of which is steve4u.com/flagcode.htm.
