Baseball dominates Cowboys 21-1, 12-2
The Utah State Baseball Club outscored the University of Wyoming 39-10 as they swept three games from the Cowboys this weekend in Providence.
Kyle McDonald hit three home runs Saturday. Two came in the opener, which the Aggies won 13-0. They scored 13 runs on 13 hits.
McDonald’s third home run of the day came in the second inning as the Aggies won 24-9. In both games Utah State had scored 10 runs through the first five innings.
On Sunday, McDonald pitched the Aggies to a rain-shortened 2-1 victory.
“Even with the short rain delay it was good to get the win,” said Utah State Baseball Coach Brett Al-Amari.
Although offense was on display throughout the weekend, Greg Ladd pitched a four-hit shut out on Saturday in the opener. Ladd struck out 10 through the six innings he pitched.
The defense didn’t let Ladd down either. In the sixth inning, Tyler Al-Amari and Justin Johnson made difficult catches off balls hit into the gap in right centerfield to protect the shut out.
The Aggies hit five home runs, including a grand slam, to give him the support needed to win the game. Utah State had back-to-back homers in the fifth inning.
The Aggies hit three more home runs in the second game. Al-Amari hit his second of the day and Johnson added another to go along with McDonald’s third of the day.
“It was impressive to see the offense come out and be so strong,” Al-Amari said.
This was the first series of the year for the Aggies.
“We came out with three wins so everything went great,” Al-Amari said. “The offensive presence that we have on this team is amazing. With the pitching rotation we have it will make it difficult for other teams to score on us.
“Personally, I have extremely high expectations for this team. Our goal is to go out there and win a national title.”
Al-Amari also said the team is hoping to get a lot of runs while making it harder for other teams to score on them.
The Aggies will play the University of Colorado this weekend. The first game starts at 12 p.m. Saturday. Utah State will look to continue its offensive production and to continue on their goal to winning a national championship.
