Baseball team hopes for good weather

Utah State University club baseball players are praying it doesn’t snow.

Friday the team will travel to Orem to play a doubleheader against Utah Valley State College. Saturday the team will be playing another doubleheader against Dawson Community College at Ogden High School.

“These are exhibition games but it would still be nice to win them,” Head Coach Ernie Rivers said. “We have a good shot at it. We have a good team this year.”

So far the team has played one exhibition game and only three league games. The team hasn’t played a full game since Feb. 10 when it finished its tournament in Moab. Since then, the team has traveled to Lewiston, Idaho, and was only able to play five innings.

“That was an expensive five innings,” Rivers said.

All other games have been canceled due to cold temperatures, rain and snow. Although the forecast for this weekend doesn’t look good in Logan, the team should be able to play in Orem and Ogden.

“We are just anxious to get outside. We’d play anywhere,” Rivers said.

Rivers said there is expected precipitation for the weekend, but his wife was in Ogden yesterday and there was no snow.

The game against Dawson is going to be one of a friendly rivalry. Former local Casey Bow is a catcher for Dawson. While in Cache Valley, Bow was a catcher for Mountain Crest High School.

USU player Rich Hansen has a brother on the other team, Kip.

The Dawson game was supposed to be held in Logan, but due to the six inches of snow that remained on the field, the game was moved.

“About a week after the snow leaves, the field will be playable,” Rivers said.

The team was hoping by March 16 the snow would be gone but now they are hoping they will be able to host Weber State University by March 26.
