Bassett-Meacham earns MWC Player of the Week honors
The Mountain West Conference announced Monday afternoon that Utah State junior guard/forward Hailey Bassett-Meacham was named the conference women’s basketball player of the week for Week 1.
The award comes after the Aggies won each of their first two games of the season, a 72-61 victory at Washington State and a 106-35 home-opener win over Northern New Mexico. Bassett-Meacham led the team in scoring in each game.
Against Washington State, Bassett-Meacham went for a career-high 23 points while going 9-of-15 from the field, along with six rebounds, three assists and a steal. The Layton, Utah native also went a perfect 4-of-4 from the freethrow line, while playing 29 minutes against the Cougars.
On Friday against Northern New Mexico, she went 9-of-12 from the field for 18 points to go along with four rebounds, a block, an assist and a steal in just 17 minutes of playing time. USU’s 71-point victory over the Eagles was the largest margin of victory in program history. It was also the Aggies’ first time scoring 100-plus points in a game since 2013-14.
This was the first time a USU women’s basketball player has won a player of the week award since 2013-14 when Jennifer Schlott earned the honor five times. Bassett-Meacham became just the second Aggie to be named player of the week since Utah State joined the Mountain West in 2013.
The Aggies are off to a 2-0 start to the season for just the sixth time in program history, and the first time since 2016-17.
Utah State will be back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as they host No. 3 Oregon at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The Ducks will be the highest-ranked team the USU women’s basketball team has ever faced off against.
