Blazing up a bonfire bonanza

Joel Featherstone

The Homecoming bonfire was lit Thursday night as students watched hundreds of wooden crates go up in flames nearly 30 feet high.

And Nic Gordon, Associated Students of Utah State University Organizations and Traditions vice president, after working through three state agencies, changing locations and getting it approved, got his bonfire.

He said he wasn’t sure it was going to happen until Tuesday.

The bonfire, held at Green Canyon Corn Maze in North Logan, was lit just after 8 p.m. by the North Logan Fire Department and little help from gasoline.

“I want the bonfire to be part of traditional activities for Homecoming Weeks to come,” Gordon said, earlier this week.

“We’re hoping to set a precedent with this bonfire so that next year we can have it on campus property,” he said at the bonfire.

“I think it’s cool; it’s huge,” said Tyce Condie, an undeclared freshman. “It is kind of freaking me out that it might bring down the corn maze.”

The bonfire took place about 200 feet away from the maze and was under close supervision by the fire department.

“It’s definitely something we need to do more often,” said Kyle Liljenquist, a student who came out for the bonfire.

“I love fires, so the bigger the better,” he said. “It’s something I’d definitely come back to.”
