Boo-Yah is intramural champion
Boo-Yah and Kiss My Pass played for the women’s volleyball intramural title Wednesday. The game, which the Passes won, 3-2, was a rematch of a Sept. 29 game. This time, however, the Boo-Yah’s won out in straight sets, 3-0, to claim the title and the T-shirts.
The Yah’s came out strong and earned a five-point lead in the first set before Kiss My Pass even scored. The Passes rallied to an 11-10 lead with the help of junior libero Shelley Andreasen.
“It feels so awesome,” said the elementary education major out of Bingham High School. “We’ve tried getting there before. It’s hard, but it’s worth it.”
Junior outside hitter Brooke Maxfield got the kill for the Yah’s to win the first set, 21-17.
“I’m ecstatic to win the T-shirt,” said the Pacific University transfer.
Boo-Yah middle blocker Dixie Warren, who said she played volleyball as a Lady Rustler at Central Wyoming College before transferring to USU, got back-to-back kills to help her team go up 5-1 and 6-1, to start the second set. The Yah’s went up, 10-2, while the Star Valley High School graduate next took her turn to serve.
“They are really positive when they play,” Warren said, of the Passers. “They never gave up.”
Boo-Yah went on to win the second set, 25-7, with a Hailey Summers kill.
Kiss My Pass went up, 3-1, to start the final set, but Summers earned another kill as the Yah’s came back to tie the game, 3-3.
“This is why I play,” Summers said, after being awarded a championship T-shirt.
Maxfield later took her turn to serve and increased the Boo-Yah lead from 9-6 to 12-6.
“More people should come out and play so we have more competition,” Maxfield said. “We only faced like eight teams.”
Warren got the kill to force game point at 14-8. Two rallies later Summers earned the final kill to win the game, 15-9, and put the match to rest, 3-0.
Boo-yah played a woman down, with only five players, throughout the season, but that didn’t stop the team from taking the title.
Warren was not present for the first game against Kiss My Pass, but she said Boo-Yah didn’t want to add a sixth player to the roster.
“It was planned,” Warren said. “We like a challenge — more touches — we’re selfish.”
Maxfield echoed her teammate’s sentiment.
“We like being able to touch the ball more,” said the American Fork High School graduate. “We don’t want to share with another person.”
Despite dropping the championship game, Andreasen said she enjoyed the experience.
“Even though we lost, it’s still worth it,” Andreasen said.
