Busy weekend a success

Erin Wadsworth

Men’s volleyball had a busy weekend taking on some of Utah’s best in a two-day tournament in Salt Lake City and then facing Boise State University at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum Saturday night.

Competing in the tournament on Friday and Saturday, USU went up against teams from the University of Utah, Utah Valley State College, Weber State University and Brigham Young University alumni.

USU came off winning three of their five games in the tournament with their large team split in two in order to play more competitively. At the end of the day, the players were ready to head back to Logan to face the Boise State Broncos at the Spectrum.

“We played pretty good at times,” team vice president and setter Wyatt Lamborn said. ” We need to be more consistent. We lost to a team that we really should have beat.”

In good form, the Aggies faced Boise State, outplaying the Broncos and offering fast serves and floor-hitting aces after much stumbling by Boise.

With a larger team, more apt to rotation, USU found their groove and sailed on to win three of out five in the competition.

“The first game we went out, and we were a little slow,” Lamborn said. “So we ended up losing the first. We did pretty well at times, but we came out kind of flat.”

Coming off their tournament play, four matches Friday and one Saturday morning, the Aggies had a hard time finding their groove at first, Lamborn said.

In the end, the guys made their way to the front by winning their second, third and fifth games against the Broncos.

Next the Aggies head to Orem to compete in the UVSC Spring Invitational on Feb. 23 and 24.

They will also have some more time in Salt Lake as they play in the Salt Lake Series number three tournament March 2 and 3. USU will then return home to host Weber State on March 7.
