Cache County Tax On Marriage

“Cache County tax on marriage”

I recently purchased a marriage license from cache County. I was charged $50 for this license. Curious about why the price was so high, I asked the clerk issuing the license, what the money is used for. She said that most of the funds go to the “displaced homemakers fund” and the “child legal defense account”. Only a fraction of these funds go towards paying county expenses associated with filing and archiving the marriage record. I believe this is an unfair tax on marriage levied by Cache County. At the risk of sounding callous to the needs of those who directly benefit from these charities, I object to my being forced to contribute. Granted the funds are put to good use. However, I think it is unethical for Cache County to force engaged couples to fork over $50 to charity, in order to get a marriage license. For poor college students saving for the financial burdens of getting married, $50 is a lot of money.
