Calderwood, Caldwell Collect Street & Smith Accolades

Utah State football players Ben Calderwood and Peter Caldwell garnered preseason recognition from Street & Smith College Football Preview when the publication released its all-WAC team and awards Tuesday. Junior defensive end Calderwood was named to the all-WAC team, while placekicker Caldwell was named the conference’s preseason top impact freshman.

Calderwood, a native of Smithfield, Utah (Sky View HS), has now been tabbed to a total of five preseason all-WAC lists. Recently, Sporting News and Athlon both tabbed Calderwood to preseason awards teams in their college football preview editions. Earlier this spring, Calderwood was on the Blue Ribbon Yearbook and Lindy’s College Football Preview Preseason all-WAC lists, to go with the new Street & Smith’s honor.

Last season earned second-team all-WAC after leading USU’s defensive linemen with 44 tackles despite missing two games. He also was second on the team with 6.5 tackles for loss and tied for second in sacks with two. Calderwood earned WAC Defensive Player of the Week honors on Oct. 9 after USU’s win against Fresno State, in which his nine tackles against the Bulldogs were the most by an Aggie lineman since 2003.

Caldwell, from Kaysville, Utah (Davis HS), was 15 of 16 on field-goal attempts, with a career-long of 57 yards. Also, 85 percent of his kickoffs were touchbacks.

Street & Smith ranked USU eighth in its preseason WAC poll, only the second publication (Phil Steele’s) not to pick the Aggies ninth.

Utah State opens the 2007 season on Thursday, Aug. 30, hosting UNLV in a 6:05 p.m. kick off at Romney Stadium.
