Drama student wins scholarship

Utah State University student Melani Rees was named winner of the drama category among six Performing Arts Showcase winners. They were each presented a $1,000 scholarship for their outstanding talents.

Golden Key International Honor Society members from any discipline may apply for the showcase. Rees was selected from a pool of more than 150 candidates around the globe. Her outstanding performance earned her a $1,000 scholarship for continuing study.

The honor society was founded in 1977 in Atlanta, Ga. The global non-profit society provides not only academic recognition to college juniors and seniors in the top 15 percent of their class. The society has 335 chapters in the United States, Australia, Canada, Great Britain, Malaysia, South Africa and New Zealand.

Evaluate USU advisers online

Students are evaluating their teachers and courses. In addition, students now have the opportunity to evaluate their academic advisers online.

An online adviser evaluation is available at www.usu.edu/ats/advisor-evaluation. The evaluations may be completed at any time during the semester. The results will be forwarded to the adviser approximately one week after the evaluation is completed.

County residents present ice show

“Winter Wonderland” is the theme of Cache Valley’s first Holiday Ice Show Dec. 13 at 7 p.m. in the Eccles Ice Center.

The show will feature Cache Valley’s own award-winning figure skaters performing solo and group programs. Boys and girls from the Cache Valley Figure Skating Club and adults from the Ice Center’s “Hot Chocolate Club” will perform in holiday costumes to festive music.

Concert held for USU alumna

A tribute/benefit concert, sponsored by the Hatch Foundation, in memory of Salote F. Otutaha, a Utah State University alumna will be Dec. 12 at 7 p.m.

Tickets are $6 for adults and $5 for children and are available at Lee’s Marketplace in Smithfield and Logan.

Thurl Bailey, former Utah Jazz basketball player, has been working with the Hatch Foundation since March to make the concert a reality. He will be performing at the benefit, along with local artists including Deanna Edwards, Carl Sorensen, Lezlee Hales Snow and Saydi Jo Hornsby.

The proceeds of the benefit will defray the costs incurred from Salote’s death. A scholarship fund will also be established in Salote’s honor through the USU Multicultural Center for members of the Polynesian Club.

CPD open house held for children

Clinical Services in the Center for Person with Disabilities (CPD) at Utah State University is hosting a Holiday Open House at the CPD for children in the community with diabilities and their siblings on Saturday from 2 to 4 p.m.

The open house will provide opportunities for children under 12 years old with learning, communication, emotional/behavioral and physical difficulties to visit with Santa Claus in an unhurried atmoshphere and take part in craft and food activities.
