Friends’ lecture series continues

The third lecture in a six-part series kicks off the semester for Friends of Utah State University Libraries, according to a press release.

The organization has planned a series of book discussions this year that features authors with ties to Utah State University. The series continues Friday with Michael Spooner, director of the Utah State University Press and Scholarly Publications.

Spooner will share his book, “Daniel’s Walk,” during the discussion that begins at 7 p.m. in the Merrill Library on campus. The discussion is free and all are invited. The next talk in the series is Feb. 21 when Alison Thorne is in the spotlight with her recently released book, “Leave the Dishes in the Sink.”

Winter musical festival returns

The department of music will host the second Juniper Winter Chamber Musical Festival between Jan. 13 and 17 in a variety of venues at the Chase Fine Arts Center on campus, according to a press release.

All events are free and open to the public.

“This festival brings world-class artists to Logan to perform and provide master classes for university string students,” said Bruce Saperston, music department head. “Local high school and middle school musicians have the opportunity to be involved, as well.”

The festival’s open rehearsals are Monday through Friday beginning at 10 a.m. in the Morgan Theatre. Master classes and outreach take place Monday through Thursday. Woodruff area council to meet

The Woodruff Area Neighborhood Council will meet at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 16 at Woodruff Elementary School, 650 S. 1000 West in Logan.

Logan Mayor Doug Thompson and staff will discuss: general plan update process, air-quality information, economic development update, public works project update, energy conservation and area crime report.

There will be time for questions and answers. All residents are welcome.

Logan Municipal Council to meet

The Logan Municipal Council will meet at 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 255 N. Main St. in Logan. Agenda items include:

* Hearing a workshop for the annexation plan.

* Hearing public comment on the FY2002-03 budget.

* Authorizing a resolution for golf course sales tax revenue refunding bonds.

Country artists come to Logan

Tickets go on sale Monday for a country concert that includes performers Billy Dean, Jamie O’Neal and Michael Peterson.

Jeff Hall, a member of Center Stage Productions, which is bringing the singers to Logan, said the artists should appeal to a variety of people. They sing some crossover numbers that have been played on pop radio stations.

The performers can be seen at the Spectrum on Feb. 28 at 7 p.m. Floor tickets are $29. Bowl tickets are $25.

Utah State University organizations and clubs will participate in carrying out the concert. For example, the Hockey Team will help with cleanup and the Rodeo Club will help with merchandise sales, Hall said.
