Cache ice skaters return as winners

Seventeen figure skaters representing Cache Valley brought home trophies from the Utah Winter Games. The skaters received a total of nine 1st place trophies, nine 2nd place trophies and four 3rd place awards.

First place trophy recipients include Natalia Brisighella, Jonah Ford, Tandi Gardner, Emma Goetze, Ellie Judd, Brittney Merrill, Jacob Swager and Jon Wassom.

Second place trophies were awarded to Luke Anderson, Savannah Broadbent, Vanessa Broadbent, Shania Laird, Chelsey Merrill and Natalie Podgorski.

Third place trophies were awarded to Tandi Gardner, Ginger Jensen, Chelsey Merrill and Brynna Swager.

“It’s so wonderful to see our new figure skaters progressing so quickly and already rivaling other skaters from around the state,” said Sue Nabor, the skating school director at the Eccles Ice Center. “Some of our skaters entered multiple events and all of our skaters placed in every division that they competed in.

“That’s remarkable since most of our skaters have been skating for less than one year,” Nabor said.

Professor urges soil preservation

A Utah State University professor is taking strides to expand knowledge about and adoption of sustainable agriculture practices that are environmentally sound and socially acceptable.

Philip Rasmussen, regional director of Sustainable Agriculture Research Education (SARE) is working to preserve soil for future generations.

USU operates the Western region of SARE, including 13 states and U.S. trust territories in the Pacific. SARE distributes over $4.2 million to the region each year in grants for research, education, experimentation and development by farmers and ranchers.

Rasmussen said, “We thought it would be easy, but obviously it’s a big job with many responsibilities.”

Over $20 million has been distributed since SARE was headquartered at USU in 1994, and roughly 599 projects have been administered in order to sustain agriculture and protect to environment.
