Former astronaut to speak at ice center

The George S. Eccles Ice Center will celebrate the start of its second year with a gala dinner, an auction and a professional ice show on Feb. 21 and Feb. 22. The show will feature former NASA astronaut Don Lind as speaker.

A Smithfield resident, Lind served aboard the space shuttle Challenger in 1985 and will speak at the formal sit-down dinner at Pioneer Valley Lodge. A silent auction will begin at 7 p.m. followed by dinner at 7:30 p.m. After dinner, organizers promise an exciting live auction with auctioneer Kelly Berezay, featuring hundreds of items from local artisans and businesses.

The ice show, presented the following night, will feature Olympic medalist Jozef Sabovcik and the acrobatic skating team of Armen Saakian and Akop Manoukian. No stranger to Cache Valley, “Jumpin’ Joe” Sabovcik is the six-time national champion of Czechoslovakia and two-time European champion. Additional performers include award-winning skaters from Utah and Jackson Hole, Wyo., and the Eccles Ice Center “Children of Light,” a group of young Cache Valley skaters.

Space is limited for both events. Guests are encouraged to purchase tickets early for best availability. General admission tickets are $9 for adults, $7 for children under 8 and seniors 65 or older. VIP and preferred-seating tickets are also available. Tickets for the dinner and auction are $25 per person. For more information, call 787-2288 or the reservation line at 752-1170.

Ag senator named to beef class for 2003

Cade Davis, a senior in animal, dairy and veterinary science, was one of 10 students in the country to be named a member of the Collegiate Livestock Leaders Institute Beef Class for 2003, according to a press release.

The objective of the institute is to encourage development of future livestock-industry leaders through exposure to and interaction with current leaders in the beef industry. As part of his membership, Davis will go to Phoenix this summer for the joint American Society of Animal Science/American Dairy Science Association meeting. He will also attend the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Summer Conference.

“Cade is one of our brightest students, and he was competing on a national level,” said student adviser Tami Spackman in the release. “We’re really proud of him.

He has been on the dean’s list since fall 2000, received the American Society of Animal Science scholarship award for 2001-2002 and was the 2002-03 senator for the College of Agriculture. He also received the “A” award fall 2002.

Leave the dishes and visit library Feb. 21

The fourth presentation in a series of six offered by Friends of Utah State University Libraries features well-known Cache Valley resident Allison Thorne on Feb. 21, when she discusses her recently published book “Leave the Dishes in the Sink.”

The program begins at 7 p.m. in the foyer area of USU’s Merrill Library. The event is free and all are invited.

The Friends program this year has featured a series of book discussions. Those attending get a chance to meet the authors as they share insights into the works, according to a press release.

Thorne is a noted educator, author and community activist. “Leave the Dishes in the Sink” is a memoir that recounts her many roles, including that of mother. In the work, she provides a small-town Utah perspective on the progressive social movements that in the mid- to late-20th century dramatically affected American society. New members are always welcome.
